Explore this 3 day MTB Stage Race
A start onto fast rolling farm roads leads you into a bit of adventure along the Wreck Route, which will demand a bit of concentration as you traverse the hillside. Climb out of the forgotten valley for vistas of the Riviersonderend mountains, and if you look carefully, the UFO. A nice stretch of rolling hills on farm roads takes you to WP 1 where you can admire the now famous UFO climb. The fame is as much for the great elevation that you gain, including a view of the sea, as for the stunning Middelplaas single track that now stretches all the way from the dizzy heights to the river below. After the fun (and most of the work) the route opens up again for some tucking in before our last singles bring you into the back of Greyton.
A flat start will send you straight into the Blue Hippo double Climb. You’ll get straight into the fynbos and up the foothills of the majestic mountain, feeling it’s aura as you head to the top of the climb after the dam, before flying down to the tepee village through fern-lined single track that will make you think you are in tropical Africa.
A quick flat connection brings you to the Hemelsbreed and Oaks singles – this is the feature of the day and because of the new start you will still have something in the tank to suck up the fun of these trails. Up Castle Hill (maybe one day we’ll build a sweet bypass!), down the Oaks pines, through the Oak glade up to the top dam and then right up to point high. From here it is one way down through the Nguni singles, Piet’s contour and then down the Casy. The Oaks welcome you with their fantastic hospitality with a feature water and spectator point where you can tell Gert what you think of his trails. Replenish before you head off across the river to visit Kootjie and Isa at Oewerzicht. Kootjie is strong and not afraid of short sharp kickers so keep something in the legs for the last section of trails nicely bermed and grippy for the technical riders. A flat finish with the Greyton mountains in front of you will give you time to focus on the beer waiting at the finish line!
Maermanskloof (maybe called that because the thin guy has the advantage on this climb!) is the first climb of the day. From the saddle you can see your challenge across the valley. First head down Boneshaker and across the valley through the Forest trails and then prepare for the Bakenskop Cobra switchback climb. Pause at the top, take a quick pic of the breathtaking views, then a forever downhill, before refuelling at the only water point of the day. Catch your breath as you head along the district road and cross the river before making your way to Bereaville and Genadendal for Davey’s sprocket and Rocky Horror, and your last double treat of the weekend down Luislang and R.I.P. R.I.P is an addition to last year’s route. Some fun twisty singles that take you home, fast.
